I honestly love out of the closet! The staff is super friendly and the selection is great. Everything is well organized, which makes the experience easier. Great selection of books also! My only suggestion would be to add one more fitting room
I love this place. Wonderful stuff at great prices. Friendly staff, and a great mission! Decided to make it my go-to for clothes.
Rude and unprofessional employees. I was told by a black female to rehang the clothes I tried on. Another one said yea in a rude tone. Which is a rediculous store policy because what are they for?? All of these females are just playing loud obnoxious music closing around not doing anything productive. If the store cares about professionalism and work ethic they should reevaluate their hiring process and do themselves a favor by letting go of these group of females. Time is 2:40 pm at the cash register, May 24.
Oh, my shoes! What a great variety of quality stuff! Had time to kill, and just stopped by to browse. Theres even old vhs and cassette tapes for the collectors! Amazing shoes and jewelry, variety of clothes, and a large selection of books... not too much household or furniture items when I went, but what was there was nice.
Their delivery drivers drive like maniacs and are a nuisance in the neighborhood.I saw one lady accelerate aggressively, blast her horn and yell out the window at a cyclist. She then swerved around and sped dangerously off down our residential street. It is sad when the businesses that are here to serve the local community make it dangerous.
Helpful and friendly staff, very organized, a lot of clothes, records, and home items - especially downstairs. Easy time dropping off my items (downstairs) for donation too.
The sales associates are beyond sweet and friendly and helpful. The woman downstairs doing the HIV testing is sooooooo sweet also. So thankful for these people who are here to provide us with this free testing.Absolutely LOVED being here with associates who actually know what customer service is all about.
Clothing section is overpriced for a thrift store IMO but their furniture and home goods are the best!!! Great for people moving on a budget.
Great space and mission, and the staff are sweet. The selection may be smaller than other shops.. but I found a Theory jacket for $20 in excellent condition. The overall quality of pieces here look to be above average.
Lady was super rude and the moment I opener the door, she said they were closed and the store didn’t close for another 20 minutes. Change your damn signs if you close at 6:30!
They have great stuff at pretty great prices. Very clean, friendly staff. The designer section is a little over priced but that’s a very small part of the store. For the most part the clothes, shoes and furniture are all priced very well
Great place for thrift shopping. Tons of stuff (I like bright colors but they also have basics) but not too much to be overwhelming. Im the kind of shopper who needs to see every item, and the stores well organized! Prices are great too. Theres a changing room and plenty of mirrors. This areas got a lot of thrift but this is my favorite. I guess not many people know about it as theyre always fairly empty. More for me!
So many books...for cheap! Some excellent clothing (50% off outerwear) and furniture finds too (there was a solid wood glide close dresser in excellent condition for $65).
Cool selection and the proceeds it benefits HIV/AIDS treatment and care. They dont negotiate on prices
I found the perfect couch here, great condition and price. You can find some really awesome pieces here, the book section is massive and they run sales frequently! Definitely my favorite spot to thrift in Brooklyn
This place is great for the community however I am having the worst experience trying to donate my clothes. They stood me up for a donation pick up and none of their phones work anymore. Im not sure if they even want these clothes anymore or if are even accepting donations.
Everything is very neat and in order compared to other thrift stores. You can dig up great and UNIQUE finds. Also, they have big selection of dresses (however no petite sizes:( ). I will be coming back!
Nice quality, affordable gently used clothing. Has a pharmacy. Supports HIV/AIDS awareness/prevention. LBGT friendly. Amazing staff.
Was super excited to come here today with a friend of mine- found some boots and went to the fitting room area to be berated at that I need to sit on the couch instead- no clear direction. My friend found a bag that she liked and was yelled “DON’T TOUCH THAT. ITS NOT FOR SALE.” To which we apologized and purchased the boots and left. We called the store later that day to hypothetically see if we can somehow name a price as we really liked the bag, to which we were left on held for 25 min. After 25 min, my friend was yelled at that “YOUVE SHOULDVE SAID SOMETHING, ITS NOW YOUR FAULT YOU DIDNT GET IT.” I called while we were on hold to see if maybe they forgot we were already on hold- before I could speak, I was yelled at even louder, “WERE YOU INTERESTED IN THE BAG? IT SOLD. YOU SHOULDVE SAID SOMETHING”, then hung up. Never coming back.
I’ve come here twice and I love the energy here. Cute clothes and lovely staff. I appreciate the fact that they offer free HIV testing. Most clinics make it a hassle to get tested because of the price they charge and requirement for I.D and the same for purchasing a home testing kit. Out of the closet is a fun and cute thrift store and can be seen as a safe place for the lgbtq+ And black community
Love love love Out of the Closet. Great clothes, wonderful service. Good sense of community and love, and obviously they do good work for the community. My one complaint was that no one was wearing a mask. This is dangerous anywhere, with covid still a very real threat, but especially as potentially HIV positive people are coming there to get tested. This puts them at tremendous risk of infection, given their potentially immuno compromised status.I hope Out of the Closet can find a way to make sure that everyone who goes there feels safe, in their health and their fashion.
Love this store! The store manager Miguel was so kind and welcoming. The store is def. a must visit. I picked up a few good books from the book section (they’re half off on Thursday’s) and I got a few art coffee table books. Miguel honestly made my day!
Great prices for great items, I love the shirts I picked up. The cashier, Grace, was wonderful.
Best place in NYC to grab some vintage clothes and support a good cause. Really good prices too—scored a formal gown for only $14!
The pickup service is great! They came and took a ton of stuff from me when I moved out of my apartment in Queens, including a variety of large furniture items like a kitchen table. Be aware that they can’t take bookcases more than 5 feet tall, but they take pretty much anything else. The driver and his partner were cheerful and polite, they arrived well within the expected pickup window, and got everything out quickly and efficiently. Would 100% recommend using their service if you need to get rid of a large amount of stuff in one go. Be sure to call a couple of weeks in advance, spots go fast.
They need to stop, $115 for target brand shorts. Everything is overpriced. Don’t bother!
Lots of great items. They have a color of the day dollar special. This means any item of with a tag. Of that color is only a buck. I love the place. Products are added daily. They have a great selection of DVDs and CDs and even VCR tapes if thats your fancy. Even better than everything above this place has a pharmacy and HIV testing. Theres no sales tax on any of your purchases.
Great selection—I got multiple brand new Brooklyn Tailors, brooks brothers, and J Crew blazers for less than 20 each. Well-staffed, great book prices, and supports a deserving cause. Will be a regular here!
The shop is great but as far as a place to take donations this place stinks. Unlike every other charity shop that sorts donations after they are received, this place sorts your items BEFORE they accept them and sends you home with the rejected items. Also they are pretty strict only accepting items in perfect condition...sorry tiny stain on the cuff.I understand that they are trying to make money for the AIDS related services they provide, but having your donations rejected feels terrible. Ill stick with sending my items to Goodwill for now...or if Im going to have them sorted through Id rather get paid at Buffalo Exchange.
Best place in the city if you want to stock up on books! found some gems for insanely cheap, and on top of it, my money went to a great cause 💜
Love this place! Prices are reasonable. Found a Mersman desk for $50 BUCKS! The furniture collection is pretty decent. The staff are quite friendly and helpful. Also, if you have an HIV exam done there, you save $5 on your purchase.
I visited this thrift store about a year ago and had a great experience, this time not so great. A year later... as soon as I came in I felt watched... I was followed around the store. Thrifting is something I love to do this is the first time I ever felt uncomfortable. The store is very small and cluttered.... Id suggest more friendly staff and security... sales associates should make you feel welcome not watched and uncomfortable... leave that to a security guard. I was hoping to have the same experience I did a year ago and I did not, I dont think Ill ever be back.
The absolute BEST experience I have ever had with a furniture donation! Here are a few reasons why:1) I called this week after the Salvation Army cancelled twice on us. With no questions asked outside of what we would like to donate, arranged for pickup within same week2) Called to confirm and while they made an error in scheduling, quickly remedied and made sure I was fit in today3) Movers were courteous, friendly and so appreciative of the donations and EARLY!4) Took great care of the house as they were removing large furniture5) Furniture will be sold at the local shop in downtown Brooklyn to raise money for a great cause. Will make someones brownstone very happy and makes me happy knowing the memories will carry on and someone will cherish it
Abby & Taylor where amazing best customer service Ive seen since being in NY you guys have definitely earned me as a long term customer thanks see you guys again and may God bless
Not only do they do free Hi V testing, they have expanded this place with more merchandise and has a nice selection of books and they sell for .25 for one or 4 for 1.00... the place is clean and well organized. The staff is friendly and helpful. You will be pleased with the prices.
Great customer service, good prices. Bwst place to buy books in bulk, if you are someone with a thirst for reading. Also you can find amazing things for a bargain, way better than goodwill and salvation army. The checkout balance somehow always comes out lower than you think. There are also vinyl records and knick knacks that are all very cute.
Great selection and much cheaper than other thrift stores in the area. However, I Overheard him telling my friend that a pair of shorts was $4 and he charged me $8. The same thing happened with a bag that was supposed to be $1 with the right color tag and he charged me $4. Im not sure if I offended this man in any way or something, but I had a pretty bad experience here and left kind of upset.
A nice thrift store in Boerum Hill. Many racks of lightly used clothing for guys and gals. They also have some furniture. I picked up a few name brand shirts for $5-6 each. The sales staff was very helpful. Even though the guy only worked there 3 days he answered all my questions and if did not know asked for help. The place does have that used clothing odor to it but its not that bad. Will stop by again.
Found it wondering around downtown Brooklyn. Nice place that resells old used clothes and furniture. When you walk in there are bowls of condoms and they ask for donations to a local hospital. The place is very neat. There are circles of clothes arranged in seasons. I found some awesome dresses circa date 1970s but no way would they fit. The furniture wasnt worth it and the couch in the front was so clean and ready to go, until I looked under the cushions-thats when I knew it was time to leave.
My favorite thrift store. You do have to stop in often to score good finds because stuff gets picked over quickly, but they have great prices and the folks working are always really nice. Plus the money you spend goes to a great cause.
You can find treasures when you pick through! My fiance and I have purchased everything from furniture, to clothes, to shoes, to antique houseware, limited edition books and great records. If youre the type that likes finding cool furniture to refinish, definitely check out the furniture down stairs. Also a great place to donate and if you have bulky furniture they do pick-ups.
Out of the Closet opened in Boerum Hill approximately 5 or so years ago, & I have been shopping in the store, considering every visit a treat since the store opened - until yesterday, March 12th. More on this visit later on in the review.Out of the Closet generally has innovative, exciting, creative unusual things for sale, & you know that you are purchasing items in honor of a worthy cause. One of the things the Boerum Hill Store is most noted for are the Windows & Store Decorated fabulously, ghoulishly, creatively, fantastically, for Halloween (once the windows are decorated for Halloween, you cannot purchase the items in the Windows until after Halloween, for which I respect the store!).The store has also begun to sell new items like masks, gloves, wax lips, etc. to wear for Halloween, which adds great levels of gaity to what was once a somewhat down at the heels, but loveable neighborhood on Atlantic Avenue. (My husband, who was an artist & phota-p?grapher & I moved to Boerum Hill in 1996; I have seen unbelievable changes in this neighborhood, some for the good, some for the bad, in the past 6 years.).I have purchased 2 sofas & 1 ottoman from Out of the Closet, clothing, books, a wonderful set of Frido Kahlo & Mahatma Gandhi dolls, & a lovely etching of the Buhhist manifestation of the White Tara from the store, all with the assistance & good humor of the staff & manager of the store over the years. Until yesterday when, I was met with the most misogynistic, power hungry man I have ever had the misfortune to meet. His name is Rolando, he is one of the sales staff, & I met him when he was speaking to a friend of mine from the excellent Salvation Army store just about 1 block away, also on Atlantic Avenue. Yes, I did a no-no, in a spirit of exuberance, when I saw a pink & white carry tote, similar to IKEA totes, in which someone had brought in a donation. I rushed over to try to claim the bag, in my spirit of exuberance, knowing that no one could love it as much as I would.Rolando proceeded to chastise me, as if I had performed some great sin: to lecture me on store behaviour as if I were a child, to dis my plea that I was actually a good customer of the store by saying he had never seen me there. He said he would call in the cops to stop me from shoplifting, when I was clearly walking away from the doors towards the dresses. He saw me looking at 2 dresses & said he would not sell them to me. What - he is denying sales for a worthy cause, just because he did not like me, because, I surmise, he blamed me for interrupting his conversation with my friend, when, in truth, it was my friend who began to speak effusively to me. As a final blow, Rolando followed me over to the ceramics section (thus leaving the front doors & the cash register in the front of the store) with a camera to take a photo of me (intrusively), probably to post it at the front desk, to bar me from the store. His actions were both verbally and openly abusive, in a way I have never never before been subjected to, over a stupid mistake on my part, which I guess was a threat to his sense of power in the store. The end result is that, as I skulked out of the store, I heard him make a disparaging remark about my being rich!!! What again ... a person who has lived in Boerum Hill since 1996, who has been a widow for o6 years, who shops with pride in Out of the Closet and the Salvation Army & Housing Works, & knows there is a gorgeous Goodwill on 61st. Street in Manhattan! What I would like to ask the Manager of Out of the Closet is whether they really wish to have an employee who insults a 70 year old woman, who refuses to allow her to purchase items at the store, who makes snap judgements about a customer he does not know, & risks having the store given a bad mention at a number of the other local stores? I went to Betty Bakery after the incident, burst into tears when asked how I was - and received much needed support from the staff&clientele of the Bakery, ALL of whom said they would March right over there & Express their anger.
Nice place. Small but has a good selection if you know what to look for. Profits go to the AIDS Healthcare Foundation and the deals are REALLY good! Legitimate thrift store where you can get things for $10 or less :)
This store is so disrespectful. I called to schedule a pick up and they picked up the phone and hung right up on me as soon as I said hello. I would pass on this one.
What can I say about Out of the Closet, wonderful experience shopping. They always have a varied selection of goods from knick-knacks, bric-a-brac, clothing to furniture. Five stars for the staff courteous and very helpful, knowledge about their inventory. Cashier was friendly and accommodating. Store was clean and racks well organized.
I think the person on register had a bad day and just made it everyones problem ... i hope the person on register feels better but please be nicer
Great hipster thrift shop! Its small, but they have good styles of clothing and shoes. Employees were all very nice and would tell you the deals when you walk in. Price is similar to goodwill.
Bought pants from there, went there the next day to buy more clothes and I was followed around by an employee and once I came out of the dressing room with the clothes I was going to buy the employee took the clothes and kicked me out thinking I was stealing. Horrible experience, never shopping there again. terrible place.
Love it here! They have great sales on top of their already low prices. Youre also shopping for a cause when you go there. Make sure you stop and the table by the door to learn about community events!
Nice place to go they have everything you are looking for and maybe more depends on your needs but workers are very helpful and polite willing to help they do work with the AIDS foundation is just great that alone will make me shop there more at least they are helping and not all about give me they give in return it will be Nice if you spread the word that way more can be done to help all walks of life
Great thrift store. I got a nice pair of pants (that look new) for just a dollar!!! also the money you spend here goes to AIDS research and other organizations that help people fight AIDS. great place!!
Great place! The prices are low and ive still got great stuff there! I havent tried the one minite hiv testing but they offer every time. Ive never really had to wait on line long. Would heavily recommend!!
Bought a few cute plates & donated a bunch of clothes and dishes, everyone was so friendly, the space is clean and well organized. Idk why this thrift store isn’t more popular!
Please post the hours that you accept donations. Arrived 20 mins before closing and was turned away because the donation window had closed. Very disappointing.
My worst thrifting experience ever ! Extremely horrible and disgusting customer service. Makes me sick to my stomach. I do not recommend going here ! I also saw a rat fly across the room as I was looking through the filthy clothing. Thank you so much
This is the LGBTQ and HiV+ community supporting version of the ultimate thrift shop. I have been here a number of times to show my support and always leave with barely used quality goods in hand. I highly recommend you check out this local community supporting version of a thrift shop. Oh and be thrifty while youre at it.
Huge thrift shop. Three levels. Service is always great. There is also a pharmacy where you can get tested. Furniture in basement and they hold it for you of you cannot take it right away. I always find at least one thing I must have there.
There was a bigger selection for books/dvds more than clothes, so if u come here for clothing, itll either b a hit or miss. but otherwise than tht, everything here is super inexpensive.u can get a tshirt for just $1.
I sometimes donate and buy. Good place. I would donate more if there was not parking problem. But some of the staff may be rude at times or moody, or both rude and moody.
Usually hit or miss, but then again, I have found a stunning vintage beaded dress there once that ended up being my wedding dress, so they hold a special place in my heart.
Love Out of the Closet and recommend this place, because no matter what you are donating to a cause, BUT they didn’t add the jumpsuit I purchased to my bag (and even discussed with the cashier) so PLEASE be mindful and respectful to customer’s purchases. Namaste.🙏🏼❤️
My favorite thrift store in Brooklyn. Really fair prices, great furniture and clothing selection, and all of it going directly to a good cause. I really like this thrift store and what they do!
I love, love, love this thrift store❣ Everyone is always super nice, great prices, great finds & the proceeds are for a great cause❣ Im only disappointed when I walk out empty handed, which by the way is a rarity, lol❣
I come here anytime Im passing by - the store is easy to glance through, well organized, and the prices are great! About half of my apartments furniture is from here.
Loved everything about this place! Amazing customer service all around. Everyone seems happy which is not something you usually get in New York City!
Very cool little place. Variety. Hope you find what youre looking for
Reasonably priced Ive had a few great finds here! The staff is friendly and there is free HIV testing and a pharmacy inside.
Cant call on the phone. Someone just hangs up on you. Over...and Over. Nothing like my Cali Out the Closet
This place has clothes, furniture, and house utilities for good prices. Ive been going here for 2 years and they still have much to offer
Well organized thrift store with a friendly staff and good music. I especially love that the money made is for those with AIDS & HIV that need assistance!
Least favorite thrift store in Brooklyn. Not a lot of selection and everything is sorted by size but the prices are outrageously high
One mans trash is anothers treasure. Clean thrift store with a great variety of fashion and furnishings. Extremely friendly staff.
I work in the neighborhood, and regularly stop in on my lunch break. I have found a lot of good clothes in good shape, and the staff are always kind.
Great place and great deals. I got two banana republic for $8. I loved working with the staff.
The employees are very nice. Have a decent selection of clothes and movies. And for a very good price
Great books and CD dvds very low prices very friendly and helpful staff...lots of clothes...plus the free testing and pharmacy...five srars
I was so excited to take my mom to this store but a few minutes inside a employee have my mom attitude for no reason 🤬😡 bad customer service
Great places to shop for cheap good quality clothes and furniture staff is really nice kind and helpful
Pretty good selection for a small store. Only thrift store around that had womens cowboy boots and a southern outfit for me.
Abby and taylor, super helpul- will be coming back!!!
Bought a dresser during the summer and was almost in new condition and was manly looking not feminine 💪🏽
Nice place, cool stuff, lots of Vinyl records, books are 4 for .50!..friendly staff
Great spot for thrifting even though its a bit small. Staff is amazing and LGBTQ+ friendly.
You can generally find some great vintage pieces for $5! And they have books!
Love this place, the people here are amazing! Such a friendly environment and great finds!
There was very bad customer service. And the employees were very rude and mean for no reason. Not shopping here again, and i do not recommend coming here for shopping. They are did not treat the customers well.
Employees are friendly and there was a good selection of clothings and not too overpriced.
The workers are very nice! I really love this place. Highly recommended.
I was here this afternoon AGAIN LOL, i didnt find anything today, but I love love to go whenever possible, staff are very friendly.
Queer affirming thrift destination, with free HIV testing, unbeatable discounts, and great service!
THIS THE LAST TIME I EVER ENTER THIS LOCATION. THE MANAGER a African American woman WHO REFUSED TO GIVE HER NAME IS VERY DISRESPECTFUL AND LACK ANY CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS.
Love this place. Even has a nice selection of books and albums.
Im addicted to the place and you always find nice stuff I love the worker
Love this spot! Amazing, friendly staff and free hiv testing for the community. ✨💗
This place has something for everyone. They also have a free clinic. Great place
Great store I love the place. But bad customer service. 😭
Always find something. This time it was childrens books (4 for a dollar) and a DVD.
A great cause with great staff and selection of items for sale at amazing prices.
There was very bad costumer service. Employee was very rude to me and my friends. Not planning on shopping here again.
Was happy to donate here! I really appreciate what they offer to the community!
I would love to support the cause but the clothing is too expensive and they wont take most of what I have to donate.
It is small but they have a good selection. Very good deals...
Love what they do but be warned they close earlier than their hours say!
Great prices. The health services they offer are wonderful
Its a nice place but person name monsur is very very rude and try to dominate everybody.
Not much of a selection for mens clothing, although there was free HIV testing
The people are very friendly and also very passionate about what they do. 💖
Quality affordable goods. Wonderful helpful staff.
Neat thrift store! Has a substantial book section.
$0.25 for 1 book; $0.50 for 4 books. We left with 17.
Great for clothing and books at $1 a piece.
The Dr, The pharmacy, The store itself.. All great
They sell really nice second hand clothes.
The best thrift store I have ever been to
Great thrift store. Some great finds.
Great prices, and vintage pieces to choose from
Get selection and products. Very good prices.
The AHF Pharmacy provides terrible service.
Great mission, great stuff. Great staff!
Great prices, great staff, a great cause!
The staff is so nice ...love this place
Lots of used stuff at good prices.
Excellent staff. Excellent value.
I like this because of the low cost.
Best thrift store ever!
Very cool thrift shop!!
Cool place to buy used clothing.
Great service , very helpful
Highly recommended
Lit, cheap and organized
Nice experience!
Great deals
Nice furnitures
Great shop
Awesomeness
I like this place. Everything is displayed nicely and it’s well-curated. I’m kicking myself because I saw something I liked and came back the next day to buy it, but it had already been sold! I’m new to thrifting, so I guess lesson learned. I’ll definitely be back and I’ll probably donate here as well to support their mission.
