I called in about a week in advance to schedule an appointment and to alert them that there would be a special needs 5 year-old who needed a draw. I explained that thered be a high likelihood that wed potentially need 2 staff people present because it would challenging and the 5-yr old is physically strong. My husband took off of work to help. When we arrived, there was only 1 staff person in the building. She couldnt do the draw because she wasnt confident that she could find a vein. I could understand that. She was just out of college. So we waited for an hour in the office for the more experienced staff member to arrive. Mind you, Id called in advance asking if they would be able to do the draw relatively quickly once we arrived so that 1. it would be minimally traumatic for our kid and 2. He had a therapy session to be at in 1 hour. The woman over the phone assured me that hed be able to get to his therapy session because this office isnt very busy. The more experienced staff arrived. But she couldnt do the draw either. She kept asking if he was well-hydrated. I affirmed...twice that he was well-hydrated (this is not my first time getting a draw done for him, unfortunately). A phlebotomist is supposed to know that, when youre afraid, your veins dont cooperate with needles. They stuck him a few times and got nothing. I would say that this is just bad luck except for the fact that other phlebotomists have consistently been able to get a draw from him within a short amount of time and without poking both arms. It may be a good place for adults. But it is not for kids.
