I LOVE this place! The staff is always nice, and I always find something I love here. The base prices tend to be higher than what Id pay for second hand, but with the sale tags you can always find pieces that are a great deal. They rotate their 3 sale tag colors that give you 30% off, 50% off, or $2. It takes a bit of hunting but you can always find some sweet deals on quality pieces. One of my favorite ways to spend a weekend afternoon is with an audiobook, looking through clothes here. 96 cents of every dollar made goes to AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s HIV prevention and treatment services, beats giving your money to fast fashion polluters.
The donation process was absolutely easy for us. There is a 15 min parking in front of the store. You park, let the staff know what furniture/item you’re donating & they will check the items to make sure everything is in good condition.
The OOTC stores downstate always treated me well and when noticing one close to my new spot in SF I got excited. Man the company must have changed because everything was overpriced. The tee shirt racks are primarily from company picnics, charity runs etc that no one will ever purchase. They had a used Mexican hoodie aka drug rug that was priced higher than a new one on the Venice boardwalk. Wild times!
Out of The Closet has great prices and an awesome mission. I frequent the Folsom location (not sure if there are multiple locations), and it’s a bit dingy inside. There are no dressing rooms and no returns so that’s kind of a bummer. Overall, I’d still recommend checking it out because of the nice pieces i’ve come upon and the low prices.
Thrifting while supporting a great cause is the number one reason to go here. The second reason being, the amazing staff. They are so kind and sweet. The next reason would be the selection of items, I sort of wanted to buy everything. The pricing is out of this world for San Fran- honestly wish they charged more so that more goes to patient care ($.96 of every dollar is donated). I found a large plaid duffel bag for $6!! I mean. Also, they have sales for certain color tags, it might change daily but there are signs posted. Ie. Yellow = 30% off. They had red tag items for $1!! The shop has high end clothing, masculine and feminine sections, bags, furniture, house hold items, hats, and shoes. SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT ⭐️
The person at the donation center was being so lazy and rejected all the items I brought. I had taken the time and energy to bring them a box full of clean and good condition clothes and a nice office chair. The person didnt even look through the box and said that the box was in bad condition (it was literally just a cardboard box) and didnt care about all of the good clothes I had.
Although I prefer to stay in the closet out of the closet thrift store is always a pleasure to run through and find something interesting
I love a well-organized thrift store. And seeing the latest amazing creations of this particular Out of the Closets window dresser.
(Pathetic response from the simpleton owner was expected like all their other responses to reviews. The fact this store let $10k+ worth of profit go to Landfill says it is NOT a legit non-profit doing good for our community. Read full review before shopping/donating here)What an awful organization. And so much lost potential. Husband and I moving to Palm Springs. No exaggeration when I state that I had clothes that could be resold for $1k’s. I mean one suit I was donating alone I paid $3k for 3 years ago. But bagged up 8 large bags (30 gallon) full of name brand clothes, many with tags still on them from Diesel, Prada, Zenga and Swiss, Nordstroms etc..Out of the Closet response; “Sorry. We won’t pick up clothes”. I explained that this was too much to even fit in the back of my car. They don’t care.So I called 800-Junk and they will come get it next week. Yes, it will be thrown away in a landfill cause I don’t have the time to make 4 trips across the city. It’s no loss of mine, but sad that a non-profit is so picky they are willing to throw away what could’ve easily made them $10k+. Out of words on this one but hey, good job looking out for the community you say you support. You essentially are “too good” for $10k+. Good job. Should be proud of yourself. My opinion; Don’t donate here. They are really not trying to be a good non-profit. They don’t support a community in a way they should.
Miserable donation experience here. Read the website for details on whats accepted, called ahead, and got nothing but sure, bring it by! After bringing in 3 loads of clothes at this miserable location for donations, donation person decided she didnt like them, or maybe us too, and just decided to make us bring it all back. After taking her pick of course. This was an absolutely demeaning experience. Always love it when supposedly queer businesses get randomly hostile at my girlfriend and I.
A shop-worthy no-frills Thrift Store with a wide variety of mens and womens clothing.Prices get discounted further in a phased way, based on how long items have been in stock. So some excellent bargains can be found. Also furniture is priced quite low to move quickly. Very friendly, pleasant staff. And shopping here supports a very worthy non-profit cause.
A precious gem in the rubble of gentrifying SOMA. THIS one gets the good stuff. I found nice stuff $1 ea. yesterday. Tho, when the really good stuff comes in it is priced much higher. Designer clothes often $20-30 range. Their are rows of clothes -all priced w var. color tags. The discount tag color changes week-to-week it seems. Yesterday, red tags were $1/purple=50% off, and yellow=30% off. Previously had an air of little courtesy .. overworked souls, vagaries of unhoused struggles spill over onto unready ladies toiling already. - lately it has more diligent workers who try to keep the racks in order and ready with cheerful assistance moreLike me, please let us give a helping hand, put the items back on the hanger nice, donate clean and folded items (dont dump a load of laundry on them). Random acts of kindness given forth here are sorely needed and welcome. Let us look after our local hard working folks. They need more security guard hrs. We can help a bit. Generate good karma where it is in need :-)
When It comes to mens close, Out of the Closet is over priced. Pants and shirts are over priced, unless you get really lucky and find the one one or2 items that have the color coded 1 dollar tag or the 50 or 30% off color tag. But this is rare. Most pants and shirts are equal to or more expensive than what you would find at Ross or Marshalls or even Macys Last Act clearance rack; except that at Macys, Ross, Marshalls, the items are NEW! Ootc has no business charging those same prices for old and often ragged items. Its just a rip off. And to make it worse, at the Folsom Out of the Closet location the staff is so RUDE!! They have a terrible attitude when you just ask a clarifying question or for any assistance. Im personally never walking in there ever again.
I’m glad for the services they provide, but donating here is a demeaning experience. The women are amazing, but the man in the donation area is mean, terse, makes dehumanizing comments and throws items at people who donate.
I rarely shop at stores that inconvenience customers with dumb bag policies. This is one of them. Regardless of the in-store security personnel on hand, the policy is All bags must be checked in behind the counter. Most stores that sell brand new merchandise don’t even do this. Won’t be returning.
Had a few minutes to spare and looked around the place. Found a couple of shirts I liked and a pair of shoes my size. Then there was a pair of black leather pants that I really wanted but they have nowhere to try them on due to Covid19. I finally talked them into letting me try them on in my car parked out front leaving my id as collateral. Perfect fit and I bought them. Thank God the manager remembered to give me the id back.
The store doesnt have much of a selection, especially for bigger folks. The dressing rooms are just a curtain that doesnt seem to create enough privacy. And as pretty as some of the display outfits are, theres literally nothing like it inside. Staff seemed fine, though!
This store always has the coolest, most unique secondhand clothes, at prices half that of Goodwill. This day, March 14th, I spent $73 on clothing. Two really special pieces cost $12 each, because they were designer pieces. Everything else was $4 or less per item. One of the best thrift stores around, and a good cause to boot.
Rude employee said we cant try on clothes and had to keep my shoes on when I was attempting to try on something, ok I understand rules. But she seemd to have a problem with specifically me. Snotty behavior for a charity.
The absolute worst customer service. Had I know how horrible and ignorant the guy with glasses was Id would have taken my donations to Polk st. Dont shop here stores a mess!
Disgruntled employees. Unpleasant experience trying to donate multiple shopping bags full of clothing shoes and household items and a wine rack I could barely carry. No one offered to help. I was commanded to Take my bags to the back! in a tone that could not be mistaken for anything but a command. Did that. Clerk in the back just said put them down. I did that. He stared at me, I had to ask for a receipt. I was then told they only send email receipts and a gesture was made to show me where the computer was. I filled out the form, it was never emailed to me. I called the store, I was told I could come back to the store and get a paper receipt (which I wanted in the first place.). I said would you send me a new one by email or regular mail. I was told no. Receipt or no receipt, I wont return . With Goodwill on Mission closed I had hoped to help HIV?Aids with my significant annual gifts. Wont do that the Out of the Closet Store on Folsom. I will find another Goodwill store where they were always organized, courteous and thankful. Bad experience trying to help!
I love it! I got 4 shirts, 1 pair of pants, a pair of brand new shoes AND a COBALT bud vase for my mom who collects blue glass.Total cost =$45 Fierce!
Tried to donate clothes an was treated pretty inhumanely...feel like the folks working in the donation department need a lesson in customer service/basic human compassion.
Great 2nd hand thrift store that benefits people with AIDS, and medical research.Has a discount price tag color of the week every week on clothing. Discount is either 75%, 50%, or best of all -- $1 per item!I prefer Community Thrift store on Valencia. It is owned by the LGBT (gay) community. There is a much bigger and wider selection of merchandise than Out Closet.CT donors can pick any of 100 verified non-profits to benefit from the sale of items. When you make a purchase, it helps many different charities in San Francisco and the Bay Area.
I love this place. I do. I go shopping here like four to five times a week and drop too much of my cash but I have never been no there and not found something I could not pass up.That being said, there is an employee there who has an attitude problem so great I hav recently had to consider not patronizing the store any longer, as her pushy, juvenile actions and curt, hissed words make my visits uncomfortable and dark, when they used to be the highlight of my day.In the past she has blatantly accused me of stealing... which I have never done... And this was after I had spent over 500 dollars at her checkout tbe day before on her register on a bike, some furniture, and an amazing collection of leather jackets. Every time she is working, she has something snide to say either to me or one of my friends, or as loud as she can about me and my friends to her mployees (oh yeah--shes a MANAGER) or, like yesterday, whizzing down the aisle I was flipping through the_shirts in only to find um over my foot with her vacuum. No excuse me, or pardon my innate clumsiness.... But I got a didnt you see me coming? which I ignored, so she followed up with a threat to kick me out of the store if I didnt move and let her sweep the VERY SPOT where I was standing. Incredible. I have seen her berate customers on numerous occasion.... But never once have I seem her help or listen to anyone. Abd Ive been patronizing the store for over 8 years now.Its a shame that she is the managing force of such an incredible charity, as she is forcing customers like me to chose not to put myself or my money in situations with people who have nothing but negative, mean, or thoughtless attitudes.
I did not think i would like this thrift store. It looks like it isnt very well kept-up and they dont really categorize the clothes well. but man, I have found some awesome pieces here! I dont know if its just good luck or if I really like the taste of the people that select their stock... but I frequently go back ot out of the closet when I want a low budget update to my look.
It’s a great cause and they do great work. Thanks to places like this countless lives have been improved. The thrift store is a little pricey but probably worth it.
Good prices and good merchandise. They dont just put everything that is donated out for purchase. They also dont pay sub minimum wages like Goodwill. Proceeds benefit services for people with HIV here and abroad.
I am a big fan of the San Francisco Out of the Closet locations. The one on Polk is probably my favorite because of the better clothing finds, but this one is better organized and has much better selections of house wares and furniture. Like most thrift stores the selection is always changing and sifting the wheat from the chaff can take some time, so dont expect a quick shopping trip if you want to find the good stuff. The staff is helpful and pleasant, so even if I dont find anything it isnt that bad.
I came here to donate clothes. I had a bunch of stuff cluttering up my closet and wanted it to support a cause I believe in so I came here. It was super easy to donate. I didnt shop as I was trying to reduce the amount of stuff I had but the store seemed well kept and like there was a ton of stuff to choose from based on what I saw.
They mostly sell clothes here, and the prices are reasonable. If you get one of the chosen color tags, then you get even more savings. The 1st color is 30% off, the 2nd is 50% off, and the 3rd color costs only a dollar.
AWESOME place for VALUE BUYINGIf you find yourself in need of some shorts...in SHORT ORDER, but youre broke? Take Macklemores advice and hit up that THRIFT STORE! This one is particularly good, price-wise (most shorts, shirts, and pants are $5.50 or less), as well as selection-wise (they are always stocked with a lot of clothing, furniture, home goods, shoes, etc.). I find myself shopping there more often than at department stores only because the Gucci dinner coat I bought for $16 listed on Ebay for $4750 (!). Yeah - you read that right...four thousand seven hundred fifty dollars. So what if it has some other dudes name embroidered inside the breast of the jacket - no one can see that! I scored a $5k jacket for $16 bucks! Enough said...
One of the better & more fun consignment stores, along with the one on California street (@ Fillmore) has a decent amount of brand name clothes, home goods, artwork, furniture, shoes & boots and nic nacs. Proceeds benefit AIDS Research.
Supports a great cause and had a decent selection. Only downside was no dressing room. So wear spandex if you want to try clothes on.
I love this store! The shoe selection isnt great, but they always have a bunch of name-brand womens clothing. I can always sink and hour into this spot.
Just go check it out. You can find little treasures,For me some great deals on furniture, nicknacks good prices on everything got a $170 stationary bike for $35 ,senior citizens discount I really like it better than Goodwill
Like any thrift store, this one is hit-or-miss. And the prices do seem a little high, but remembering theyre for a good cause… I have had hit or miss service, but mostly hit. I have received some exceptionally friendly service here and some exceptionally lame.
ALWAYS THE BEST! EVERYONE who works there is COOL! MARCIA is a SUPER STAR and has been for YEARS. EXCELLENT bargains and CHEAP prices!
Hey, I want all to know; Im very, very pleased 😄 with the service/kindness, and overall intentiveness Ive been given. Its been a true pleasure is I rebuild. Thank you ever so much. Lester Stone
Super nice store! I found a lot of cheap great quality stuff for Halloween 🎃
Ive been a loyal customer for years said goodbye to church st.when they closed been comeing to 9th street store.allways great staff always polite always find great things and good prices.its like going on aTreasure hunt and and always finding some must have thing.SOO it gets the Gdady review of 5 stars top rateing
Great thrift shop that generously supports a good cause. Lots of clothes to look through, plus some household items/furniture, and books at good prices.
Customer service here is at its prime. I would have given it five stars if the selection was better pricds and had a better selection. After all, this is a second hand shop.
Great deals on used clothing both used & new, I liked it. I found an awesome pair of shoes and jeans. Check it out.
What deals! I got 4 tops for under $10, including a Dana Buchman. Definitely going to check them out again.
This store doesnt have much of a selection of anything. The dressing rooms have a curtain that barely conceal you while changing and no hooks to hang your clothes.
Great place to find decent/affordable second hand merchandise (clothes/kitchen ware/household items/etc) at the same time supporting a great organization!
An ok store a bit on the pricey side. You can find good deals on furniture though. I visit every now and again.
Very friendly, and their shirt collection is fantastic. You can practically feel the good work AHF is doing.
Got a great professional dress for $1! Entire upstairs is womens clothing. Lots of good finds.
Texted some photos of a couch I wanted to donate and they gave us the green light for drop off. Made donation easy!
Im in this shop aleast once a week! Ive just about furnished my living room with items that go fast if your a late riser. AJ-san francisco
Loudly humiliated my trans husband for trying on clothes citing an imaginary ban on trying clothes for monkey pox.
Great designer clothing at really great prices. And all proceeds support AIDS research. Wonderful clothing store.
Ive been in this place several times I go in there today and security guard harassed me because Im deaf Im done with this place
Best thrift store in town. They dont have dressing rooms though
This store doesnt generally get good items, they are extremely aggressive about getting people out of the door even before it closes, and the womens section is upstairs, hot, and not particularly fun to shop.
Solid thrift store. Every week a different colored tag gets put on sale. Ive often had success with their shoes
Great stuff and Lots of it was marked down lower than your average second hand store
I find both beautiful and useful things here and their Staff is great and friendly! Plus My money goes to a great cause!
I was not pleased with my visit, there is hardly any product compared to the Columbus ohio store, and it smells as well.
A great place with little cash on hand and the workers are nice to me which is a plus in my book.
Good thrift shop. Nothing amazing when I went but that doesnt mean their wont be some other time.
Great place, with a great message, noble mission and fair prices on decent items.
Run by an awful company that opposed PrEP.
Very unpleasant visits by this store, the employees were rude and when I️ asked for the manager I️ was told she is out to lunch. Also no bike parking :(
This is my favorite thrift store hands down. Great deal every time I go.
Im always able to find something quite soothing and affordable to my liking.
Great place for clothing household items sometimes good deals on furniture
Great prices good selection. Customer service is lacking
When you buy here you also help support a good cause! They also accept donations of any kind.
Great place, I go there often, you never know when you are going to find a gem in there.
Always something new. Ive found some great gems at this place, and the prices are always affordable/reasonably priced.
They have great weekly color tag sales for $1, 50% off, and 30% off.
Great space, nice orderly and clean selections with friendly helpful staff!
Small thift shop, you can find some nice things here and its for a good cause.
Great deals and always new stuff every week.
